June was Pride Month, one of celebration, acceptance and affirmation of sexual orientation and gender identity.
Data drives clinical decision making – and collecting patient data on sexual orientation and gender identity (SO/GI) can help create a more informed picture about the health of LGBTQ individuals. This information can help providers to better understand client or patient needs and provide relevant and appropriate care, and equip researchers, policymakers, and public health professionals to better identify disparities and barriers to care.
There is a known issue in the VIPR system where generic searches to find patient records will get hung up and essentially freeze the system--causing VIPR to become unavailable to all users.
Beginning on July 7th, any user searching for patients in VIPR via the Solutions Center will be required to provide either of the following points:
• MRN, or • First Name, Last Name, and 1 other demographic (date of birth, gender, address, etc.)
Old way of searching requirements: First orLast Name and an additional demographic (could be first/last name, DOB, Street, City, zip code, phone)
New way of searching requirement: First and Last Name andan additional demographic (can be DOB, address, DOB, Street, City, zip code, phone)
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Policy and Planning is seeking nominations for a statewide Community Information Exchange (CIE) Task Force that will launch in August 2022.
This taskforce will develop a statewide blueprint for CIE, honoring that coordinated care and health equity, supported by electronic exchange of information, is vital to improving the overall health and well-being of individuals.
Data Standards, Community Stewardship Key for SDOH Data Exchange Data standards and community stewardship are critical elements for SDOH data exchange, according to Greg Bloom, strategic advisor on community resources and engagement for the Gravity Project, a community-led HL7 Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) Accelerator.
In the public policy space, two federal changes will affect the way health information is shared across different stakeholders.
In a landmark bill titled the American Data Privacy and Protection Act, an emphasis is placed on a concept called "privacy by design." This bill's objective is to shift the burden of privacy onto entities who collect data as opposed to the patients themselves. MiHIN will be creating a brief for MiHIN Participant Organizations, which will be distributed in July 2022.
Additionally, in President Biden's gun safety bill, healthcare was also emphasized through funding. This included increased funding for school health centers, behavioral health clinics, Pediatric Mental Health Care Access, screening, and treatment. MiHIN will be tracking with these activities to ensure our products and services are adapted to the evolving behavioral health landscape.

Tim Pletcher, CEO of MiHIN, provided the keynote for this event which explored specific interoperability use cases focused on maternal health, emergency response and preparedness, and public health data reporting.
