The Power of Data: Addressing Racial Disparities in Maternal and Child Health
Black History Month offers a moment to reflect on past struggles, celebrate resilience, and reaffirm our commitment to a more equitable future. While progress has been made, stark racial disparities persist in healthcare – particularly in maternal and child health outcomes.
This Black History Month, we're spotlighting how health information exchanges (HIEs) and health data utilities (HDUs) – and the data they enable – can be a powerful tool to reduce these disparities and support better outcomes for Black mothers and their children. Read more here.
This Month's Highlights
Diagnostic Imaging for Breast Cancer Use Case
MiHIN has developed a targeted pilot use case - Diagnostic Imaging for Breast Cancer Use Case - for breast cancer imaging exchange, including the identification and exchange of breast tissue density. This Use Case streamlines the exchange of breast cancer screening result reports from a centralized, cloud based, system agnostic registry and will ultimately seek to ensure centralized access, more efficient workflows, and improved care.
MiHIN Use Cases foundation of Michigan Multipayer Initiatives’s Newest Payer Policy Comparative Table
To decrease administrative burden on providers and support their success in serving patients, payers offer financial incentives to providers who participate in MiHIN Use Cases.
Michigan Multipayer Initiatives (MMI) has collaborated with these payers to create a table of HIE incentives and a Social Care/SDoH Michigan Payer Incentives Comparative Table for a comprehensive view of incentive programs and requirements. It will be updated on a yearly basis and maintained in the comparative payer policy tables dropdown of the MMI website.
The ONC has released draft USCDI v5 which is focused on the addition of standardized health data classes and constituent data elements that improve patient care and facilitate patient access. The final version is anticipated to be published July 2024.
Streamline workflows and optimize care coordination with MIGateway®
Efficient access to patient information is crucial for delivering coordinated, quality care. But navigating multiple reporting systems and fragmented data can be a time-consuming and frustrating reality. Thankfully, MiHIN offers a single solution to seamlessly manage patient information from the multitude of reporting systems connected to the network - The Medical Information Gateway, or MIGateway®.
On February 22nd, MiHIN hosted the second of three workshops on the topic of advanced statewide medication reconciliation.
Over 30 healthcare professionals participated and shared challenges and solutions related to producing and accessing comprehensive, accurate, and active medication lists for patients.
The final installment in the series will be hosted on April 18 in Lansing. To receive the invitation to register for this, contact katelyn.lewis@mihin.org
The summit highlighted the critical role that SDOH, including maternal health, behavioral health, childcare, food access and housing, play in determining health outcomes for various communities across Michigan.
MiHIN is proud to be a partner to MDHHS and countless other agencies and organizations. It remains committed to addressing SDOH and advancing health equity through its role as a neutral steward of data.
