To tackle deaths due to drug overdose in Michigan, MDHHS and MiHIN have partnered to develop and implement the statewide Electronic Consent Management System (eCMS) which promotes better patient medical record transparency and care coordination amongst treatment providers and prescribers. Without this timely information, healthcare providers are potentially prescribing opioids to an unknown opioid abuser.
The eCMS captures and notifies treatment providers of patient consent allowing for the sharing of any history of substance use disorder treatment across care teams.
The eCMS is currently being piloted by three prepaid inpatient health plans and their substance use disorder clinics with hopes that it will be available for all providers and clinics by the end of 2023.
MiHIN recognized Black History Month and reflected upon what it means to support our ecosystems’ commitment to advance race equality and implement our work with an eye toward health equity.
On a systemic level, data on race and ethnicity is critical to understanding who patients are and how to improve their care, as well as identifying the root causes of health disparities. Health information exchange is critical data infrastructure to collect race and ethnicity data in order to fully understand, challenge and overcome racial inequities that persist within our society.
MiHIN, as the state designated entity for health information exchange and a lead entity in our state’s 5- year HIT Plan, is responsible for understanding the current state of information flow to support end of life care.
This 3-part virtual workshop series will level set on: • Who is MiHIN, and what role has MiHIN played in ACP to date? • Historical development of ACP in Michigan and nationally • Current literature on ACP outcomes • Difference between ACP as a process and ACP data movement
The goal is to understand, from care teams, nurses, doctors, payers and hospital perspectives, what data/documents are important to make available to clinicians, along with when, how and why.
We would like to thank the HIT Commission and MDHHS for highlighting this as a need in their strategy and supporting this event
