Statewide Health Data Infrastructure Supports Timely Monkeypox Response in Michigan

Monkeypox isn’t a new disease . There have been cases in the United States before, and there has been a standard medical diagnosis code to identify monekypox since before 2015 (first an ICD-9 and then an ICD-10). What’s new is the fact that monkeypox is currently spreading from human-to-human in the United States.

With cases present in Michigan, the Bureau of Infections Disease Prevention (BIDP) at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is working diligently to drive the Michigan response. Rather than having to connect individually with the thousands of labs and providers in Michigan, MDHHS gets a single feed from Michigan’s statewide health information network, MiHIN. MiHIN has worked closely with MDHHS for over a decade to ensure that the department can get critical public health data from across the state. This automatic data flow ensures that MDHHS can spend its time and energy analyzing, responding to, preventing, and ensuring the health and wellbeing of Michiganders rather than chasing down data.

Noteworthy News and Deliverables

  • Despite exceptional strain on State of Michigan human services programs and resources during 2020-2021, in late 2021 MDHHS was able to convene a new SDoH program team, bringing dedicated technical and subject matter expertise to catalyze and guide work to enhance social care and reduce health disparities. A request was made to MiHIN to conduct a series of statewide SDoH workshops to better understand the current state of SDoH data capture and exchange within and across sectors and to prepare to address the full complexity of the work necessary to equitably manage cross sector data sharing.

We are proud to present our findings in this whitepaper, hot off the presses.

  • MDHHS announces Community Information task force aimed at improving data sharing to address social needs.

MiHIN Can Help You Meet the HIE Objective

On August 1, CMS issued the final 2023 Inpatient Prospective Payment Systems (IPPS) for Acute Care Hospitals and the Long-Term Care Hospital (LTCH) Prospective Payment System (PPS) Rule, which MiHIN had provided extensive comments for earlier this summer.

These rules are pertinent for our stakeholders because compliance with them dictates if they will be able to receive federal funding, which most organizations are heavily reliant on.

While we would be happy to provide our comment letter and summary on the content of the rule itself, there is one area where we can directly help our stakeholders: The HIE Objective measure, worth 30 points of a hospitals score.
